Chaparral Man Arrested After He Beats Girlfriend on their Way Back from Concert

Wednesday, November 2, 2011 - 7:13pm

CHAPARRAL-- A man has been arrested after Doña Ana County Sheriff's investigators said he beat his girlfriend, leaving her with several facial fractures, head injuries and bruises, and contusions to her torso.

Investigators said Jonathan Hay, 25, was on his way back from a concert in El Paso on Oct. 30 witha group of people when he and his girlfriend began arguing. That's when Hay began punching his girlfriend repeatedly in the face until she lost consciousness.

Hay was dropped off at his home that night, while the victim stayed with a friend. Investigators said she returned a short time later out of concern for the safety of her children.

The next morning, investigators said Hay prevented the victim from using the phone to call police and relatives for help. Hay then pushed her to the ground, and kicked her in the torso and buttocks repeatedly. They said Hay then gathered the victim's clothing, doused them in a flammable liquid, and set them on fire.

Hay's grandmother -- who lives at the residence with Hay, his girlfriend, and their two children -- called 911.

The victim was later taken to an El Paso area hospital where she was treated for her injuries.

Hay has been charged with aggravated battery against a household member causing great bodily harm, two counts of batter against a household member, interference with communication, criminal damage to property, and deprivation of property of a household member. Hay was also wanted on three additional active warrants for assault on the same victim from July 2011 at the time of his arrest, as well as for animal vaccinations and traffic violations. All three bonds totaled more than $3,800.

Hay is currently being held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center on a $50,000 cash bond.
