Want a dog or a cat? Adopt a new pet pal

Tuesday, January 15, 2013 - 3:26pm

A calico cat named Emerald and a couple of elderly German shepherds at the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley are hoping their luck might turn around with permanent adoptions to forever homes.

Emerald was recently diagnosed with feline leukemia, which qualifies her as a free adoption, according to shelter Director Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock.

According to Vesco-Mock, it was the cat’s temperament that led her to wait a while longer to see whether Emerald can find a forever home.

Vesco-Mock warns that Emerald’s condition requires that a potential home not have any other cats, as her disease can be transmitted feline to feline through the salivary glands.

The two German shepherds have been at the shelter since December and also have great personalities, according to shelter staff. One was brought in as a stray and the other was surrendered by her owner.
