Downtown El Paso- The City Council voted 6-2 this afternoon to postpone a much-anticipated vote on the sale of dogs and cats within city limits.
At the start of the day, a vote seemed likely. But strong opposition from one group seemed to cause the Mayor to push off the vote.
They're called the El Paso Coalition for the Welfare of Pets. Members come from smaller groups in the community like the Humane Society of El Paso.
Some people think the Mayor's proposal is inhumane, as it calls for animal shelters to spay and neuter animals older than 4 months in their care.
Pet store owners are worried the new ordinance will cut into their profits. Above all, they asked the city to move slowly and consider the opinions of group members before making a decision.
The council says it will do just that. Changes will be considered and the ordinance discussed again on October 5th.
