El Paso, TX (KDBC) — Hector Tellez, a convicted drunk driver, will spend decades behind bars. For two grieving families, this fact alone has brought a sense of justice. And the willingness to forgive the man who killed two 16-year old boys after driving drunk.
A mother's tight and tearful embrace after forgiving Hector Tellez, the convicted drunk driver who killed her son. First, with one of Tellez's three children who told her, "I'm sorry." Then with his brother Lorenzo Tellez.
"He would have wanted me to do that because they're God's people, too," Patricia Montes, the mother of Jonathan 'Jon' Cervoni said.
It all happened in July of 2011. 16-year olds Jon and Aaron Carillo were helping Mark Dobbs with car trouble. Tellez was drunk and behind the wheel and hit the three teenagers. Mark was the only one who survived.
"Jon and Aaron were a different breed," Rey Molinar a friend of the victims recounts, "You won't find kids like those guys." Molinar says their group of friends is no longer the same. Although they are comforted knowing the spirits of their lost friends are still with them.
"I know when we hang out a lot we're always thinking that's something Jon would have laughed at or here's something Aaron would have said," Molinar told us.
The stark reality that both boys are gone is hard to take but Montes says there is some reprieve knowing Tellez will be serving 40-years in prison.
"Definitely at peace now. Knowing that his family can now understand how we feel without our other half," she stated.
Friends and family of the victims have started the "Jon and Aaron Foundation," an organization aiming to bring more awareness to the dangers of drinking and driving. Their Facebook page can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/JonAaron-Foundation/183198198419167
