Armed with boots on their feet, and packs on their back, two combat veterans are walking cross country to raise money for cancer.

"Ruck for a Cure" is literally a cross-country effort.

The pair is walking from Myrtle Beach, S.C. to San Francisco, Calif. over the next nine months.

Wayne Whitbeck and James Allred's journey began when Whitbeck's father lost his battle to cancer in 2012.

Allred's mother is currently fighting the disease.

"We wanted to put something military on our aspiration of walking across the country, so that's why we picked up our rack sacks, backpacks if you will and decided we can help fight the disease and still keep in touch with our military roots while doing it," said Whitbeck.

Their goal is to raise $50,000 to donate to St. Jude's.

No matter how tough the terrain, they say they won't stop.
