EL PASO - Some scary moments for an El Paso utility worker this afternoon, after he was stuck 15 feet in a trench.
We're told the utility worker, 26, was in a ditch in the upper valley, operating a safety box just after 12 p.m. today, when he was suddenly pinned between that safety box and a crane.
Rescue crews said the impact, and the tight space that he was trapped in, made it very difficult for him to breathe. The fire department said it took crews one hour to get the man out, and get him medical attention.
"He was pinned temporarily. He was un-hooking the chain that was used to lower the safety box in when he did that, the box shifted and pinned him between the back...and the safety box,” said Matt Hiett, from the El Paso Police Dept.
The fire department said that had the safety box not been in place, the situation could have been a lot worse.
The utility worker is recovering at Las Palmas, tonight.
The incident is under investigation.
