UTEP warns about false door-to-door solicitations

EL PASO — Two suspicious solicitation attempts prompted UTEP officials to warn the community about false door-to-door solicitations.

The University of Texas at El Paso reminded the El Paso community that its students, staff and faculty do not engage in these types of solicitations.

UTEP officials reported that two weeks ago, a resident was approached by a person at Sunland Park Mall who claimed to be a University student. This person solicited donations in exchange for magazine subscriptions.

This week, a student was approached by a person at the Union Building and claimed to be fundraising on behalf of KTEP-FM, the public radio station housed in UTEP’s Department of Communication, also by way of magazine subscriptions.

“These solicitations occur several times each year and I want the community to know that UTEP does not permit these practices,” said UTEP Police Chief Cliff Walsh.

Anyone with concerns should report such solicitations to University Police at 915-747-5611, or the El Paso Police Department at 915-832-4400.
