EL PASO- A UTEP professor will show more than 1000 high school student how to learn fundamental math and science skills with demonstrations on skateboards and BMX bikes.
Bill "Dr. Skateboard" Robertson, an Associate Professor and Associate Dean in the College of Education, will accompany members of his Action Science Team to demonstrate math principles in a three-day outdoor show.
The show started Tuesday, May 17th at Hanks High School from 10:30 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. The exhibition is followed by classroom work that reinforces the observed demonstration.
The demonstrations were organized as "Skateboard Mathematics" which is a part of UTEP's GEAR UP program, which helps students learn about higher education opportunities.
“The emphasis is on instruction and learning, as valuable mathematics and science concepts are explored in the context of these fun and exciting sports,” says Robertson. “There is a positive message that learning is a lifelong process and that science and math are in every aspect of our daily lives.”
Robertson and his team, which features the Stuntmasters BMX Pro Team as well as local El Paso skateboarders will share the same format at shows that begin at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, at Parkland High School, 5932 Quail, and at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 18, at Bel Air High School, 731 N. Yarbrough.
