El Paso, Texas (KDBC) — The Department of Homeland Security is taking measures to make sure border patrol agents aren't wrongfully shooting people. The department will soon start testing dashboard cameras in the vehicles of border patrol agents.
Federal officials say an unprecedented number of excessive force complaints led to the decision. At least 19 people have been killed by Border Patrol agents since 2010.
Government officials hope video footage will help in excessive force investigations while also protecting agents from false allegations. Some agents will also wear lapel cameras attached to their uniforms.
