U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is expected to make a major announcement on drug crime sentencing guidelines today (Monday).
According to an advance copy of remarks he'll make today in California, Holder will say federal prosecutors will stop seeking so-called "mandatory minimum" sentences for people convicted of non-violent drug offenses.
Officials say this new policy would mean fewer federal prison inmates and would save taxpayers the costs of housing them.Civil rights groups have long backed an end to mandatory minimum sentences, saying they affect a large number of minorities and low-income families.
