LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The umpire who threatened to eject Gadsden High School baseball players for speaking Spanish will be resigning, according to officials Wednesday.
Officials with the New Mexico Activities Association confirm Cory Jones sent the association a letter of resignation on Friday.
The letter was received when the office reopened Monday.
Jones is believed to have told players they had to stop speaking Spanish or would be ejected during a game in Alamogordo Friday.
Officials could not elaborate as to why he chose to resign.
