El Paso, TX (KDBC) — Three major TxDOT projects may cause major headaches for the thousands of El Pasoans who rely on Loop 375 and Spur 601 but TxDOT claimed the overhaul is necessary for the growth of the Sun City.
TxDOT is talking about widening Loop 375 and Spur 601 to accommodate more cars, easing congestion. But not before slowing down traffic in a major way.
TxDOT is promising big new things for East El Paso and Fort Bliss. We asked one woman if she thinks the delays and congestion will be worth it, “Yes, I think it's going to be worth it,” Nancy Rodriguez Self, of Far East El Paso said.
Major projects aiming to widen Spur 601 and Loop 375, adding frontage roads to the area, as well as introducing a new type of intersection to the Lone Star state -- right where the roads intersect.
"Yes, I heard something about it and I think it is worth it,” Tim Whiting of Northeast El Paso said.
It's called a diverging diamond intersection. So new, TxDOT admitted it may be disorienting to drive on.
TxDOT officials are planning on showcasing an instructional video on how to drive on it. El Pasoans agreed these changes must be made to tackle the rush hour congestion. "Yeah, because if you drive there about 7:30, 7 o'clock in the morning. 7 to 8 you could see that there should be more lanes there,” Whiting said.
The dates for the project have not been set. TxDOT said it depends on when they go to bid, which means, construction may take place at different times. Or, they may run at the same time.
"For me, yes. Any kind of improvement in this city I love it,” Self told us.
This can cause much more congestion, much more than what we’re seeing now.
The third project includes turning Montana Avenue into more of a freeway.
The meeting about Loop 375 widening will take place October 24, 2013 at the El Dorado High School Library from 5 to 7 pm.
The Diverging Diamond Intersection – Loop 375 at Spur 601 will take place November 4, 2013 at the El Dorado High School Library Lobby from 5 to 7 pm.
The Montana Avenue meeting will be held on November 14, 2013 at the R.E.L. Washington school cafeteria from 5 to 7 pm.
