Socorro- Over the weekend, we reported that two Socorro City Council members resigned their seats and the city has begun working toward a resolution with a state investigation.
Council members Willie Madrid and Jesse Gandara Jr resigned their positions, but the Mayor Pro Tem, Gloria Macias Rodriguez said they will continue to work for the city until May. Then their seats will be up for election, available to any resident of the city and that district of office for at least a year. She pointed out that any candidate should also not owe any back taxes to the city. The unexpired Mayor's seat will also be up for election. All three positions will be temporary as another election will occur in November.
The resignation of the council member's came after District Attorney Jaime Esparza's requested an investigation by the State of Texas into the extension Madrid and Gandara's term of office.
Dave Garcia, Socorro City Rep, said they will continue to cooperate with the Texas Attorney General's investigation and that, on legal advice, the City extended their terms of office legally based on Texas Senate Bill 100. That bill was created for the purpose of extending terms of office specifically for returning military. Known as M.O.V.E. or the Military and Overseas Voter Empowering Act.
The city says it has done nothing wrong and it will be business as usual.
