Family and friends will be met by nearly 300 soldiers returning home from Afghanistan on Wednesday night.

Troops from the 501st Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, are scheduled to return from Afghanistan at 9pm at Biggs Army Air Field.

The troops were deployed last December to join a combined military coalition of more than 62 nations, aiming to promote a more "secure and stable region."

The soldiers, along with Coalition and Afghan Security Forces, performed several different missions geared towards responding to crises, defeat hostile extremists, and facilitate the smooth flow of operations in Afghanistan.

The 501st BSB worked under International Security Assistance Forces to assist the Afghan government through mentoring and training as U.S. Forces continue a responsible transfer of security to the Afghan National Security Forces.

Other similarly-sized units from the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division will return at various points between now and the end of summer, and early fall time frame.

Over 1,500 soldiers from 1st Brigade are still deployed in Afghanistan.
