Jury selection in the trial of the man accused of driving drunk leading to the death of an El Paso police officer begins Friday.

Alejandro Fierro is facing intoxicated manslaughter charges.

It was back in October 2010 in the early morning hours that El Paso police said Fierro ran a red light at the intersection of Zaragoza and Saul Kleinfeld in east El Paso and t-boned a police cruiser. The impact was so violent the squad car didn't stop until it slammed into a tree crushing the passenger side.

Officer Karl McDonough, who was sitting in the passenger seat died at the scene. His partner officer Ricardo Lopez was seriously injured.

Police said McDonough and Lopez were responding to a call about a drunk driver when the crash happened.
