Time to Change Clocks and "Fall Back" and Check Smoke Detectors

Friday, November 2, 2012 - 9:20am

Daylight savings time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, November 4, and residents will "fall back" one hour by adjusting their clocks to standard time.

The Las Cruces Fire Department said it is also the time to install fresh batteries in their smoke detectors, and test them to make sure they are working properly.

To check smoke detectors, press and hold the alarm's "test" button.  If it beeps or rings loudly, that means it is working properly.

LCFD officials said candles or matches should not be placed under the fire alarm to activate and test the device because that can cause an actual fire.

Studies show that a working smoke alarm can often provide the critical extra seconds needed to escape a potentially deadly blaze.
