On Saturday morning, the director of a charter school in Silver City, New Mexico announced 3 of their students were killed in a plane crash that happened Friday afternoon.

New Mexico State Police say the pilot of a small aircraft was trying to land it when the plane burst into flames, killing the three passengers and the pilot.

The crash happened at 4:30pm at the Whiskey Creek Airport.

A man who saw the plane go down says he knew he couldn't help.

"Run over there and help whoever I could help, but I knew that was not going to happen because of the explosion I saw. It was like a mini atomic bomb," said Robert Huerta.

The names of the four people killed have not yet been released.

Police say they are waiting for the medical investigator to confirm the identities, which won't happen until Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating what caused the plane to go down.
