Thousands of luminarias light up NMSU campus

Sunday, December 2, 2012 - 11:20pm

Thousands of candle-lit paper bags lined walkways and buildings at the campus of New Mexico State University Sunday night for the 28th Annual Noche de Luminarias.

The annual tradition dates back to 1984 as the President's Holiday Reception and a way for the university to kick off the holiday season.

"She's enjoying it a lot, it's her first luminarias" said Amanda Garcia of her daughter's first experience at the luminarias.

The luminaria tradition comes from the 16th century when the Spanish would light small bonfires along the road to guide people to midnight mass.

In the Southwest they are seen as a symbol of hospitality.
