The traditional start of the Christmas shopping season is usually Black Friday. But this year, some stores are opening earlier than ever on Thanksgiving night and that has many employees seeing red.
Target announced it would open for business starting at 9 p.m. Thanksgiving night. The earliest the store has ever started its Black Friday sales and that cuts into valuable family time for employees.
Last year, some Target stores opened at midnight Friday despite a petition that circulated and received more than 200,000 signatures asking them not to open on Thanksgiving night.
This year, Walmart, Toys R Us, K-mart and Sears are all opening their doors at 8 pm.
Target spokesperson Molly Snyder said in a statement that "Target's opening time was carefully evaluated with our guests, team and businesses in mind."
Snyder also said that Target employees receive time and a half pay for working national holidays and many are excited at the opportunity to work extra hours.
