EL PASO (KDBC) — A study of lipstick suggests the makeup may be doing more than giving the appearance of plump, shiny lips; it could be hazardous to your health.
A new study finds toxic lipsticks may be in your makeup bag.
"I think it's really shocking because it's a daily use and you don't know what you're putting on your face," said Karina Rivera.
"I think it's really surprising. Makes me worry about what other makeup I use... mascara, eye liner… and if they're going to tell me something else is in that. It makes me a little worried to use it," said Amanda Carrillo.
Some women are concerned, others are not.
"I don't wear it very much or at all really so sure it shocks me but it really doesn't mean much," said Alexis Leon.
The study said many popular lipsticks and lip glosses contain toxic metals like cadmium, chromium and aluminum and some at levels that could be harmful.
Doctors said excessive intake of the metals over time can lead to stomach tumors and nerve problems.
But researchers said don't toss out the lip gloss just yet, they hope their study will prompt more oversight by health regulators. Still, these students said they'll think twice next time they apply.
"Are you going to keep wearing it? Probably not. I would reconsider. So you're going to cut back on the lipstick and lip gloss? Yes I think so," said Rivera.
"I'll definitely read the study. See what the dangers are exactly. Maybe there are some lipsticks that don't use that but I'm defiantly going to read it first before I apply my lipstick next time," said Carrillo.
To lower the amount of lipstick or lip gloss you ingest, blot it with tissue.
Researchers were not saying which brands of lipsticks were sampled.
