An El Paso soldier is dead after a bizarre military training accident Tuesday in Guatemala. The victim has been identified as SPC Hernaldo Beltran, Jr., who was an army radio operator.

Beltran was assigned to the 56th signal Battalion at Fort Sam Houston. The 24-year-old died when a large tree branch fell on a group of soldiers working on an engineering project as part of a humanitarian mission called “Beyond the Horizon.”

Three other soldiers suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Beltran is a graduate of America's High School.

A similar accident occurred during a “Beyond the Horizon” mission two years ago in Guatemala when another soldier was killed after being hit by a falling tree limb.
