fort bliss — Thousands of military homes on Fort Bliss and WSMR will be fitted with solar panels as part of a $1 Billion plan by a california company to bring solar to military installations across the country.
Company officials say the systems at Fort Bliss and WSMR will be capable of offseeting more than half of the electricity used in each community.
Army officials say Fort BLiss has a goal of being energy self-sufficient by 2018.
This project represents the next and largest phase of SolarStrong, SolarCity’s five-year plan to build more than $1 billion in solar projects for up to 120,000 military homes throughout the United States. SolarCityexpects to initiate construction in January, and is initially seeking to fill more than 100 installation, electrical, and maintenance jobs connected to the project.
