Socorro ISD Addresses Student Safety in Wake of Shooting Tragedy

Monday, December 17, 2012 - 3:13pm

EL PASO — The superintendent of Socorro Independent School District released a statement touching on school safety after last week's tragic school shooting in Newton, Conn.:

"I want to assure you the safety and security of our students and staff remains our number one priority, and we have systems in place to help prevent and respond to emergencies. Every SISD campus has a crisis plan and is expected to practice lock-down and other safety drills on a regular basis.

SISD has police and security forces dedicated to protecting our schools. In addition, we maintain strong partnerships with the El Paso Police and Sheriff's departments to ensure proactive and responsive efforts are efficient and effective. Exterior doors are locked during the school day, and all visitors are required to sign in at the front office prior to entering our facilities. I want to emphasize, however, that our security systems must be strictly adhered to by all staff and parents in order to be effective – it takes a team effort to help keep our schools safe! We are in the process of revisiting the safety measures at all of our campuses and taking prompt corrective action if deemed necessary. Therefore, I am asking for your cooperation and support as we implement changes to our safety policies/procedures in an effort to protect all our stakeholders.

These types of events can have a profound impact on children. If your child is in need of counseling services as a result of this terrible tragedy, please contact your school counselors who will be ready and available to assist. As a parent myself, I will continue to view and secure the welfare of your children as if they were my own.

Again, our top priority has been and remains keeping every member of Team SISD – students, staff, and visitors – safe and secure. Thank you for your continued trust and support of our district."
