El Paso — A social media group is asking Texas residents, including El Pasoans to support two bills which would repeal Texas Blue Laws.
The Facebook page, "End Texas Blue Laws" has already garnered support of more than 20,000 people specifically asking lawmakers to support House Bill 421 and Senate Bill 326. These two bills would expand operating hours for package stores from 66 hours to 88 hours per week, including Sundays.
Proponents of the bill say expanding store hours would allow small business owners to hire more employees, which would also generate more revenue in local taxes.
We spoke with a local bartender on Thursday morning who agreed the law should be repealed, "I think they're really kind of old, archaic laws that really are irrelevant now and are kind of based on supposed moral grounds but have kind of become bureaucracy at this point," Walter Byers said.
We also spoke with another local bartender over the phone who told us he does not mind the blue law because it doesn't really effect bars. He says people have already adapted to the law and he believes the law controls consumption.
