CLOUDCROFT, N.M. — The southern most ski resort in the country is open for business after a year hiatus due to poor snowfall last season.
This winter Ski Cloudcroft was able to open Christmas Eve after receiving nearly two feet of snow from a much needed winter storm.
"It's a lot of fun," said Samantha Marshall visiting from Austin. "I'm really glad that we came down here."
Marshall and her family spent more than 10 hours traveling to Cloudcroft.
With a 700 foot vertical drop, Ski Cloudcroft is perfect for beginners and also allows more experienced skiers to have fun.
"My kids have never skied before so I wanted to take them some place where they could learn," Marshall said.
Her children took advantage of the resort's two-hour ski lessons from experienced instructors who are very familiar with the mountain.
The family-operated resort goes the extra mile to cater to families.
Ski Cloudcroft sees visitors from all over the region including a lot of Mexican nationals, but most visitors to the area come from West Texas.
"I live in the desert so it's really pretty to see how beautiful it is up here," said Madeleine Westman from El Paso.
Ski Cloudcroft officials said they expect to continue being busy on weekends and upcoming holidays.
But they don't expect to be overly busy so people can still enjoy shorter lines making their way up and down the mountain a lot quicker.
