The Socorro Independent School District will welcome back more than 44,000 students in 46 schools for the new school year, prepared as a team to offer the highest quality, rigorous education for all students.

The second largest school district in Region 19 will advance with strong strategic directions developed to meet the needs of all SISD stakeholders.

The first day of classes for all SISD students is Monday, July 28.

“This is going to be another highly successful and productive year in Team SISD,” said Superintendent José Espinoza. “We have been planning and preparing to continue Achieving Success as a Team and to give every student at all grade levels a rigorous, quality education to ensure they are college and career ready. We are committed to serving all students as if they are our own children.”

One of the most exciting new additions for SISD this year is the opening of the 46th school in the district – Mission Ridge Elementary School.

The $18 million state-of-the-art facility has a capacity of 800 students and will serve kindergarten through fifth-grade students in the Eastlake High School feeder area.

The new school is one of the last Bond 2011 projects to be completed and is a welcomed and eagerly anticipated new development in the Sparks community. Mission Ridge was completed on time and within budget and the impressive new campus lives up to SISD’s bond motto of Promises Made, Promises Kept.

SISD is also launching the new school year with reinvigorated college readiness efforts including various new programs and initiatives aimed at achieving optimum student excellence. Among the initiatives are:

Operation College Bound, a rigorous college preparatory curriculum for students from kindergarten to 12th grade, with an emphasis on the development of writing and critical thinking skills as well as non-cognitive skills, such as self-discipline and persistence, that are necessary for college level coursework.

A pilot program that will give all incoming Socorro High School and El Dorado 9th Grade Academy freshmen a new laptop to use throughout their high school years.

Two new advanced academic academies to focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The School of Advanced Technology (SATA) will be offered at Eastlake High School and SYNERGI will be offered at Montwood High School.

Robotics programs and camps at SISD elementary schools, such as Campestre Elementary and Robert R. Rojas Elementary, to engage students at an early age in STEM learning and heighten their awareness of STEM higher education and career opportunities.

Walk for Success, a dropout recovery campaign, to welcome back students to our district who have not finished their high school education and provide them with the support and tools necessary to earn their diploma.

The Walk for Success community outreach day is scheduled for Sept. 20.

In addition, SISD is committed to maintaining highly qualified and effective faculty and staff to deliver excellent instruction and offer the best strategies in teaching and learning.

SISD is growing its own leaders with the highly successful Principal Aspire Academy, which has already cultivated nine current outstanding school principals and will soon begin its next cohort of participants.

SISD also recently launched a weeklong New Teacher Learning Academy to ensure new educators hit the ground running with proper training and a Dual Credit Scholarship Program to fund secondary teachers’ graduate level coursework that will expand students’ dual credit course offerings.

“We are determined to work as a team to give our students the very best education they deserve,” Espinoza said. “With the opening of another school in the district and more upcoming facilities and improvements, extensive professional development for teachers and district leadership, and a “100%...No Excuses” vision of excellence, Team SISD is well on its way to become the best school district in the nation.”
