El Paso, TX (KDBC) — The man at the helm of Downtown El Paso's baseball stadium project is stepping down. City Engineer Alan Shubert has been selected as El Paso Water Utilities Vice President of Operations and Technical services effective February 3, 2014.
Shubert will oversee the operation of EPWU's six water treatment plants, 150 underground wells, the system of pipes and reservoirs which store and deliver water throughout the city, and the maintenance and operation of EPWU's storm water management system.
“Working at El Paso Water Utilities is an exciting new opportunity,” said Alan Shubert. “It will allow me to continue to grow in my career in public works and hopefully serve the citizens of the City of El Paso in a new and meaningful way.”
Shubert began his career over 32 years ago, including 10 years at the City of El Paso as City Engineer, Director of Development Services and Director of Building Permits and Inspections. Most recently, Shubert was appointed as the Project Engineer for the El Paso Ballpark.
The City of El Paso has yet to release a statement as to who will take over Shubert's role as Project Engineer through the completion of the project.
“Alan’s proven leadership and considerable knowledge and experience will ensure the Utility’s continued success,” said John Balliew, El Paso Water Utilities CEO & President.
Shubert has also worked closely with EPWU on various projects and initiatives regarding the Utility’s Stormwater Master Plan that outlines long-term projects to reduce the flood risk to city residents and their property by improving the drainage system.
“Alan will always be remembered for his extraordinary efforts and leadership in the recovery of the aftermath of the storms of 2006,” said Joyce Wilson, City Manager for the City of El Paso. “This is a great professional opportunity to Alan and we wish him the very best.”
A native of northern New Mexico, Shubert moved El Paso in 1998 to work in the private industry. In 2003, he was then appointed as Director of Building Permits and Inspections Department for the City of El Paso and spent 10 years working at the City in different capacities related to public works.
Shubert holds a degree in civil engineering from New Mexico State University and is a licensed professional engineer.
Shubert will replace Mr. Daniel Avila, who retired from the position in December of 2013.
