Sheriff's Office Urges Parents To Check Sex Offender Website Before Trick-Or-Treating

Wednesday, October 31, 2012 - 4:26pm

Before you head out to trick-or-treat tonight, hear this warning:

We first told you about "Operation Unmasked" last week when Sheriff Deputies checked up on Sex Offenders on probation, making sure they did not have any decorations tempting children to come to their doors on Halloween night. 72 Houses were checked with only 3 not in compliance.

However, the Sheriff's office says it's a good idea to know who lives in your neighborhood in case a sex offender not on probation lives down the block. There is no law forbidding these offenders from having decorations or giving out candy.

The sheriff's office says it's a good idea to check the county sex offender website or download a phone app to know where these offenders live.

There are an approximate 400 Sex Offenders who register with the EPCSO-S.O.R.T. Unit. Out of those 400, there are approximately 190 sex offenders who reside in a home within El Paso County. Out of those 190, 72 sex offenders are either on probation or parole. The remaining sex offenders reside in a halfway house. The total number of sex offenders in El Paso County, to include the city, is approximately 1200.
