UPDATE: 1:52 p.m. Public Information Officer Michael Kinney released wrong information on a shooting in Mesilla Park.  The following is his explanation of what happened:

Media friends: After a couple of calls and discussions with some of you I realized that I was not clear on my last message. It was me! I was the one that erroneously reported the case was a confirmed homicide which in turn some of you put out as well. I was not implying that it came from any of you! Apologies if that was not clear in that last message.

If you are not aware I get the information that is put out to you from the deputies and investigators in the department. The largest source of info is from the Patrol Division and that’s who I received the info from this morning. In my haste to get something out to you all, I released basic info about it being a homicide before I could get in touch with Investigators.

So again, sorry if my intent was misunderstood.

Lieutenant Michael Kinney
Public Information Officer

MESILLA PARK - Reports of a homicide in Dona Ana County are apparently greatly exaggerated. Unknown Object The sheriff's office initially reported that a man died of a gunshot wound to the head just west of Las Cruces. Investigators later sent us the following news release:

This case was erroneously reported as a confirmed homicide by uniformed personnel this morning to me before I had a chance to speak with investigators. After speaking with investigators a short time ago, I learned that at this point this case is NOT a homicide. The victim is apparently still alive although in very serious condition at a hospital in El Paso.

It occurred yesterday evening at approximately 7:30 pm in a trailer park off of Watson Lane which is southwest of Las Cruces in Mesilla Park. Apparently several shots were fired at a residence there, at least one of which struck the victim. The victim was transported to UMC in El Paso with a gunshot wound to the head.

There are no indications that a vehicle was involved in the shooting, contrary to some reports that this was a “drive-by”. Investigators are still working the scene and leads to identify the shooter. I will update you as more details become available.
