Several outdoor events scheduled Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and there are several weekend events scheduled to help celebrate the season outdoors.

More than 25 bands will take the stage Saturday for the third annual Neon Desert Music Festival in Downtown El Paso. Gates will open at 3 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Franklin and Oregon. The party will go on until 2 a.m. The event is cash-only, but there will be two ATMs on site.

There will be more fun under the sun at the KLAQ BalloonFest at Wet N Wild. The three day festival, which is now in it's 28th year kicks off early Saturday morning when more than 30 animal-shaped balloons will take off at dawn, or approximately 6 a.m.

The water park will open at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The bands will hit the stage starting at noon.

A one-day ticket costs $19.99 in advance, or $29.99 the day of. Tickets are sold at area 7-11 Alon stores. For more information, go to http://klaq.com/balloonfest.

The Southern New Mexico Wine Festival will also be in full swing throughout the weekend. It is held every year at the Southern New Mexico State Fair Grounds west of Las Cruces.

Admission is $15 for adults 21 and older. People under 21 get in free, but must be accompanied by an adult. For information, visit http://www.snmwinefestival.com.

On Monday, a Memorial Day service will be held at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. A 21-gun salute will start at 9 a.m. The service is free and open to the public.
