Canutillo, Texas (KDBC) — Classes at Canutillo Middle School were suspended after construction crews severed a water main line that interrupted water service to the campus. The incident occurred at 11:30 a.m. and students were sent home starting at around 1 p.m.
Water main repairs will be fixed by the end of the day and classes will resume as normal on Wednesday morning, officials with the Canutillo Independent School District said.
“Our students were never put in any danger because of the water main break, but we were forced to cancel classes once we figured out that restroom service would not be available for the rest of the day,” said CISD Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz. “The wellbeing of our students is a priority for us.”
Students were bused home if it was determined that a parent or guardian was waiting for them at home. Parents were allowed to pick up their students at the school, as well.
The school identified about 70 students who did not have a parent at home. Those students were bused to Alderete Middle School, where they remained until the end of the school day, were taken home by bus or a parent picked them up.
“We are happy that this massive movement of students went off without any incident and that our students made it home safely” Galaviz said. “We look forward to resuming our classes as normal tomorrow morning.”
