A study of 911 operators from 24 states found about one-third of potentially traumatic phone calls caused them to be emotionally distressed.
About three percent of operators had severe enough symptoms to be diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder.
Operators most commonly listed the unexpected injury or death of a child to be the hardest type of 911 call to handle, followed by suicidal callers.
