One student is in custody after Americas High School in east El Paso received a threat and officials find a backpack with a 'suspicious device" on campus.

According to Socorro ISD officials, a threat was made against the school and the decision was made to evacuate the campus as a precaution. SISD police and campus officials contacted El Paso Police who were then sent to the school.

Once officers arrived, they searched the grounds and found a backpack with a 'suspicious object.'

Upon further inspection, SISD officials describe the device as a "dummy, grenade-like device, that was hollowed out.'  The backpack, along with the device was removed and students were allowed back into the school.

SISD officials say EPPD officers arrested a student in connection to the suspicious package call. They add that while the item may not have been an auctual, functioning device, the possession of the device on school property is against district rules.
