A 27-year-old woman is dead this New Year's Day after she jumped from a moving car on I-10 near Reynolds following an argument with her husband.

Vielka Cruz, 27, was the passenger in a red 2006 Dodge Magnum driven by her husband, 32-year-old Fred Merriwether. Police say the two became involved in an argument and Cruz opened the door of the Dodge and jumped from the moving vehicle on I-10 east near Reynolds shortly after 1:46 a.m.

A second vehicle, a 2010 Nissan Sentra, driven by 23-year-old Berenice Grajeda was unable to avoid Cruz in the roadway and ran over her. Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

EPPD suspect that Cruz was intoxicated at the time of the accident. Cruz' husband, Merriwether was not intoxicated nor was Grajeda. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
