Peanut Plant is Shut Down After Salmonella Outbreak

Portales, NM — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has shut down a New Mexico peanut plant after a salmonella outbreak sickened more than 40 people. Sunland Peanut Company pulled its products from shelves at several stores across the country. On Monday, the FDA found bacterial contamination at the company's plant in Portales, New Mexico and suspended Sunland's license. The company's vice president says workers have torn down and rebuilt all the equipment, and is waiting for the FDA to approve a re-opening. This is the first time the FDA has shut down a plant since a 2011 food safety law came into place.
