El Paso, Texas (KDBC) — We are learning more details about an alleged botched root canal by a former El Paso dentist.
El Paso police arrested 63-year-old Richard Montoya last week on six counts of Dentistry Act Violation for practicing with a revoked license.
Criminal complaints filed against Montoya show a patient received a root canal from him in June 2012, who then had to go to the Sierra Medical Center for severe tooth pain.
The witness received antibiotics and returned to Montoya's office... where he told the patient to "double the dosage" of antibiotics, according to the criminal complaint.
More than a week later a large abscess developed Montoya drilled the abscess to drain it, according to the complaint.
The patient filed a complaint with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners a year later and learned Montoya's license had been revoked since 2011.
An undercover officer went to Montoya's office, 2507 E. Yandell, in October while wearing a wire, confirming Montoya was still practicing.
Montoya has since bonded out of jail.
EPPD emphasizes that this is an open investigation and invites citizens to contact police if they have any questions regarding the case.
According to EPPD, patients are not considered the victim in this case. The TSBDE is considered the victim and the board will be following up on the charges related to this case.
Local 4 News was able to obtain copies of Montoya's disciplinary records from the TSBDE, which indicates that Montoya's license was revoked in 2011 after he failed to complete continuing education which was required as part of a previous disciplinary action from 2006. Montoya also failed to pay a fine imposed as required as part of his disciplinary action.
The records also show that Montoya's license had previously been suspended in 1997, 2003 and 2006. He had also been disciplined for practicing with a suspended license from September 1, 2004 through January 12, 2005 and then again from September 1, 2010 through October 1, 2010.
Some of the original allegations against Montoya include allegations of improper medical record keeping along with a patient who alleged that Montoya failed to provide quality dental treatment stemming from a root canal and crown restoration.
