El Paso, Texas (KDBC) — When someone recovers from substance abuse, there is often no praise, no reward, no recognition. One organization tried to change that Thursday.
Aliviane, Inc., a substance abuse and mental health treatment agency, held its "Journey to Recovery Pageant" for their female clients who have recovered from substance abuse.
Many donned crowns and sashes at the event, which was held at the Camion Real Hotel in downtown El Paso, alongside actual beauty queens.
One beauty queen said she was inspired by the ladies.
"No matter what, whatever the past is, you can overcome that and become the beautiful queens they are today," she said.
Aliviane's spokesman says the event sends a powerful message to El Paso.
"Treatment works, and recovery is possible in all stages of substance abuse and mental health," said Guillermo Valenzuela.
