El Paso, TX (KDBC) — UPDATE #2:
El Paso Police have identified the victim killed in a crash Monday morning as Constantine "Costa" Coloduros, 25, from West El Paso. The passenger in his car who suffered minor injuries is Michael Zamora, 26, of Canutillo.
El Paso Police Spokersperson Detective Mike Baranyay confirmed a 25-year-old man died from injuries he suffered in the crash on I-10 West.
According to Baranyay, an El Paso Police officer was patrolling traffic on I-10 west near Piedras when a black car sped past him at speeds the officer believed to exceed 100 miles per hour. The officer, who worked for Central Regional Command, alerted officers from the Westside Regional Command that the driver was headed in their direction at very dangerous speeds.
The driver of the black car lost control on the curve under the downtown overpass, causing the car to spin then hit a guardrail and the concrete support beam of the underpass. Baranyay said most of the impact was to the driver side.
Baranyay said investigators do not believe the crash was a result of a chase.
"All of the information I have at this point is the officer was not chasing him," said Baranyay.
A man that was a passenger in the car suffered minor injuries. Police said he tried to help the driver.
"The officer did, along with the passenger, work to remove the driver from the vehicle and began first aid to include CPR," said Baranyay.
The driver was taken to University Medical Center where he later died.
Police closed off a portion of I-10. Drivers are forced to take the Downtown exit and can get back on I-10 west at Yandell. The closure is expected to be in place until at least 7 - 8a.m.
One man suffers serious injuries after car crash in Downtown El Paso.
The accident happened just before 1:30 a.m. near I-10 & Porfirio Diaz exit ramp, west bound.
Witnesses on the scene said they saw paramedics giving the man CPR.
No other vehicles were involved. No other injuries were reported.
