El Paso, TX (KDBC) — The economy may be improving, but you wouldn't know it from the number of people on food stamps. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one in six Americans is on food stamps. That's up nearly three percent from a year ago.
In Mississippi, 22 percent of the population is on food stamps. That's the highest rate in the country. New Mexico is close behind with 21 percent of the state's residents receiving food stamps. In Texas, 15 percent of all residents are recipients of the program.
