One Direction concert at Sun Bowl Stadium announced

Wednesday, November 27, 2013 - 12:20am

If you haven't heard of One Direction, you probably have at least heard their songs. Tuesday, UTEP announced the boy-band will make a stop at the Sun Bowl during their North American Tour on September 19th 2014.

They took home two awards at the 2013 American Music Awards and their recently relased album shot to #1 in 97 countries around the world. The band consists of five English-Irish performers that got their start on the X-Factor, UK edition. UTEP confirmed the concert date at the Sun Bowl Tuesday, at a press conference.

"Should be interesting, they're kind of hot," said a UTEP student.

And whether or not you're a fan, the concert is to sure boost our local businesses and economy, according to UTEP Special Events staff.

"The pull that this group has is amazing. They are one of the top selling acts in the world. When the tickets go on sale, there's an increased number of vehicles that crossover the bridge, " said UTEP Special Events Director Jorge Vasquez.

"When artists and other bands see that El Paso's getting a lot of attention with those big names and maybe we'll start getting more traffic,” said a UTEP student.

El Paso is hosting along with much larger cities like Houston, Dallas and Phoenix.

"We had to sell the market. We had to sell the stadium that we have, which is a beautiful facility," said Vasquez.

Local students at UTEP, while not necessarily the target market for the band's music, seem to support the business it will bring to the Sun City.

"Let's have more people come visit El Paso. I can see it as a good thing," said a UTEP student.

"We're gonna benefit tremendously from events like this, hopefully the first one of a lot more," said Vasquez.

Special events officials are expecting a sellout, with ticket sales reaching more than $4.
