A man suspected of shooting two South Texas police officers is "presumed dead" in the Rio Grande valley town of La Joya. The suspect in a capital murder case had been spraying bullets Tuesday night from the house he barricaded himself inside.

The Hidalgo County sheriff said officers rammed the front door, inserted tear gas and exchanged fire. The sheriff said the man is "presumed dead"... but that won't be confirmed until a bomb squad clears the house.

The suspect told police he booby-trapped the home with explosives. Police say the two wounded officers and six others pinned down by gunfire were rescued.

The suspect was a 29-year-old man wanted for capital murder in the killing of a Mexican national found dead behind a vacant home in Edinburg last week.
