Los Angeles, CA (KDBC) — The American Medical Association now classifies obesity as a disease. The LA Times reports the group voted to approve that decision Tuesday. The declaration recognizes obesity as a medical condition that requires treatment and prevention. The LA Times quotes an AMA member as saying it will "help change the way the medical community tackles this complex issue." Obesity affects about one in three adults and 17-percent of children in the U.S.
