Las Cruces, NM (NMSU) — New Mexico State University offers a chance to learn about wildlife, animal breeding and other related topics through various courses hosted by its Department of Extension Animal Sciences & Natural Resources during the second annual AG Days Degree Program at the Las Cruces campus Thursday, Aug. 28, and Friday, Aug. 29.
“The program is an intensive learning opportunity for anyone interested in updating or expanding their knowledge in animal agriculture and resource management through a progressive series of courses related to animal science, natural resources and ag economics,” said Marcy Ward, Extension livestock specialist and program coordinator.
The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, with registration prior to boarding vans for tours of NMSU Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center and the Santa Teresa Border Crossing.
“While at the Chihuahuan Desert center, participants will learn about the current research in cattle management, breeding and range management practices,” Ward said. “At the border crossing, they will see how livestock is exchanged across the Mexican border.”
Thursday’s activities will conclude with the opportunity to attend New Mexico Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Day activities prior to the Aggies football game against the California Polytechnic State University Mustangs at 6 p.m. Tickets for the game are not included in the Ag Day Degree registration.
The pregame activities begin at 3 p.m. Dozens of groups representing all facets of New Mexico agriculture will have shaded booths in the parking lot where people may sample local foods and watch a variety of demonstrations. For more information about Agriculture Day, visit http://nmda.nmsu.edu/.
Course work will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, with a series of special topic live demonstrations related to reproductive management strategies, Beef Quality Assurance and range monitoring presented by Ward, John Wenzel, NMSU Extension veterinarian, and Nick Ashcroft, NMSU Extension range management specialist.
“Following lunch, which will be provided, participants will select from two primary curriculum paths – animal science or natural resources and ag economics – during four sessions,” Ward said. “The abridged classes will be hosted by a group of Extension specialists and NMSU faculty.”
There are no prerequisites to attend, but Ward advises beginning with Level I courses to get acquainted with the material.
Four areas of interest will be presented in the animal science track – Ruminant Nutrition I and II, Beef Cattle Reproduction I and II, Animal Breeding I and II, and Beef Cattle Disease Management I and II.
In the natural resource and ag economics track, sessions will be Range Management I and II, Wildlife I and II, Forestry Management I, Ag Economics I and II, and Range Fire Ecology.
Friday’s activities will conclude with a barbeque supper.
Cost for the two-day event is $50, and includes tour, course materials, Friday lunch and the barbeque. Single day tickets are $30. Deadline for advance tickets is Aug. 20. Walk-in registration is $60, or $40 per day.
