LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The New Mexico Department of Transportation held a public meeting Monday afternoon in Las Cruces to discuss changes to billboard regulations.
The department wants to establish standards for all outdoor advertising that will include electronic messages, changes in fees and permits.
"The increase in fees will help alleviate the administrative costs of administering the outdoor advertising program which will assist in outdoor advertising control across New Mexico," said Mike Otero, NMDOT Outdoor Advertising Program manager.
Otero said about 10 people showed up to the Las Cruces hearing to ask questions with most concerned with the ncrease in fees.
Otero said most people seemed to be in agreement when they learned the increase helps pay for costs.
The changes now head to the State Transportation Commission for review and approval.
Otero said once approved, the changes will likely be implemented at the end of this year or early next year.
