This may be bad news to many students in New Mexico; a bill that would extend the school year to 200 days, has advanced to the New Mexico state House.

The proposal cleared the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee. Those in favor of it say it would be a way to improve education; opponents say the state can't afford it.

As it stands, the state education code only calls for a 150-day school year, which is far below the national average for students.

The proposal has moved to the House Education Committee.
