(CNN) -- — New York City may become the first major U.S.city to snuff out cigarette sales to people under 21-years-old.
The city's health commissioner and the city council speaker announced a proposal Monday to raise the age to legally buy cigarettes from 18 to 21.
It requires approval by city council and the signature of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who supports it.
Officials say raising the age limit could cut smoking among 18 to 20-year-olds by more than half.
