El Paso (KDBC) — I-Guardian is the newest program to protect children from predators online.
This national cyber safety campaign is led by the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
Officials from HSI visited Horizon Heights Elementary School Tuesday to teach students to “think before you click.”
"They've got the internet at their fingertips, whether it's mom or dad’s cell phone, or their IPad. It’s second nature to them. Unfortunately they can be very trusting because they are innocent kids,” said Javy Pedroza, special agent in charge for HSI.
He said creating awareness about the potential dangers is critical for both parents and children.
One in 25 youths have encountered sexual solicitation online, according the U.S. Department of Justice. In 74 percent of cases, these solicitors have also made contact in person with the minor.
Pedroza also said parents need to be aware of what their child is doing online, in addition to understanding how popular social networking sites work.
