Mayfield and Las Cruces high schools plan food drive

Tuesday, October 29, 2013 - 7:19pm

One of the nation’s top high school football rivalries comes to a head November 8, 2013 when the Las Cruces Bulldawgs square off against the Mayfield Trojans at Aggie Memorial Stadium. An entire week devoted to the rivalry begins with the “Rivals United to Beat Hunger” parade at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 2 at the Third Judicial District Court building at the corner of Church and Water streets in downtown Las Cruces, said LCHS teacher and Honor Society sponsor Kathleen Gardner.

There is no fee to participate in the parade, but donations will be accepted to cover the cost of the parade permit and barricades, said Gardner. All donations which exceed those fees will go to Roadrunner Food Bank for use in the local community, she said.

The parade kicks LCHS vs. MHS Rivalry Week and the week-long “Rivals United to Beat Hunger” canned food drive.

The schools’ goal for the week is “city-wide participation in our effort to beat hunger in the community,” said Gardner. “In partnership with Roadrunner Food Bank, local schools are encouraged to collect canned food and non-perishable food items during the week of November 4-8, 2013 to compete for the traveling trophy. The week culminates with the LCHS vs. MHS game at Aggie Memorial Stadium. Food collection bins will be placed at the entrances to both gates of Aggie Memorial Stadium. The public is encouraged to bring food items to the game,” she said.

“It's great to see the rivalry being used to give back to the community; being used to bringing it together for a common good. I love that we get to compete to out-give each other,” said Mayfield teacher and Honor Society sponsor Ann Gardner.

The deadline to sign up to be in the parade is 5:00 p.m. Thursday, October 31. To register or for more information, contact Kathleen Gardner at 575.640.3998 or kgardner@lcps.k12.nm.us.
