LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Governor Susana Martinez wants to establish veterans cemeteries in rural parts of New Mexico.
Martinez, in a news release, said the current federal cemeteries available in Santa Fe, the Silver City area and Fort Bliss are sometimes hours away from families making it hard to visit.
The Governor would like to build about four small initial cemeteries in rural communities that now have more than a 130,000 veterans living in those areas.
The New Mexico Department of Veteran's Services is drafting a plan to fund the project that would cost about $400,000 to $600,000.
The funds would be approved by the state legislature.
