EL PASO — If you want to watch the Asarco smokestacks come down you can purchase a front row seat high atop mount Cristo Rey. The mountain is one of the best vantage points in the area. The Mt. Cristo Rey Restoration Committee is asking for a $5 donation on demolition day, $20 if you want a spot in the crown at the base of the statue on the actual monument.
The committee recommends people head up the mountain around 4:30 a.m if they want to get there in time to watch the stacks come down.
"From the very top you can have a clear shot. It's a clear view and it's going to be a perfect place to watch it from. The distance is just perfect so hopefully we don't get any of the dust or debris that may come. If it does that's going to be quite a way for it to travel," said Ruben Escandon.
Extra staff will also be brought in to help make sure the hike is safe for anyone who decides to make the trek to the summit.
